Staying Fit During Quarantine: Favorite Free Online Workouts and Tips

Are you feeling like you’re not in great shape since the coronavirus breakout? If you’ve gained the quarantine 15 or you just don’t have as much energy, it may be time to start your fitness routine back up (or start one for the first time--go you!).

Staying fit during quarantine can be even tougher than staying fit in a group fitness class or at the gym, though. It’s hard to get started and you don’t have anyone right there with you, cheering you on.

Here are some ways to make it easier on yourself, from tips on what equipment to get to the best videos to watch on YouTube. Take a look!

Working Out at Home: Staying Fit During Quarantine

Finding the motivation to stick with your fitness routine is hard, especially when you’re home alone and not around friends who encourage you. If you’re looking for some simple habits to help you make fitness a priority, we’ve got a couple tips for you.

First, make sure you have the supplies and tools you need. You’ll be much more likely to skip your workout if you don’t have a yoga mat like the teacher on the video recommends. Get a mat, an exercise ball, resistance bands, some light dumbbells, and even a couple of yoga blocks to get rid of any excuse to skip a workout because of lack of equipment.

You need the right workout clothes, too. Get dressed right away when you get up. Put on your workout clothes so you have no excuse not to work out.

Stream Workouts Online

There are so many free online workouts you can do at home. While you may have been used to going to the gym, that doesn’t mean you need the fancy machines to stay healthy.

If you’re looking for low-impact workouts without lunges, squats, or jumps, try following MrandMrsMuscle on YouTube. This workout especially gives you a good burn with the modifications you need.

For HIIT (high intensity interval training), stream workouts from The Body Coach Joe Wicks, like this one. You can also try some PopSugar Fitness videos, especially the ones featuring Raneir Pollard. These will make you sweat extra!

For more relaxing movement, you can find yoga videos for any ailment, pain, or time of day when you follow Yoga with Adriene. She and her dog, Benjy, are ready to guide you through some yoga practices and you’ll feel great when you’re done.

Stay Active

You may not want to hear this, but the best way to stay fit is to keep moving. While at-home restrictions make us feel like laying down or lounging and not doing anything, the best way to combat weight gain or lethargy is to stay active.

Here are some great ideas for staying more active even if you’re not streaming a workout today.

Rearrange your house so that you have to go upstairs more often. Even a few more staircase climbs during the day can help your quads stay strong.

Encourage your kids to stay fit, too. Help them understand how important working out and being healthy is for their bodies. Take them on a walk or for a bike ride. Make it a regular part of your day.

Instead of sending them into the backyard on their own, go out with them. Point out interesting parts of nature and observations you make about the wildlife you see there. Invent a game with a kickball (simple things work well: throw it up high and send a kid to fetch it--mine love this activity!).

Dedication to Your Goal

Staying motivated is hard sometimes. One of my favorite fitness instructors on the Planet Fitness app insists she isn’t always motivated--but she is dedicated. The difference there is you show up anyway because you know it’s good for you, even when you don’t want to get your body moving. Remember your why, the reason you started working out to begin with.

Staying fit during quarantine doesn’t have to be a huge headache. Remember to give yourself all the kudos and pats on the back you need. Share your fitness journey with as many people as you can. Form groups for support and use the same apps as your friends, so you’ll get encouragement even if you’re social distancing and staying at home.
