Best Podcasts to Inspire Adventure

Are you looking for ways to inspire adventure while adventures are hard to come by? Podcasts and audiobooks are wonderful ways to transport yourself to another place, even during a pandemic when you can’t go places IRL.

There are podcasts and audiobooks on virtually every topic. It is important to instill a sense of adventure into our children, and listening to podcasts and audiobooks is a great way to do it. Here are some of our favorite podcasts to get you ready for your next trip.

Happy Camper Radio

If you and your family love camping, Happy Camper Radio is sure to inspire adventure. Host Skip Huber is dedicated to providing information and inspiration to all campers, regardless of how much experience they have.

It is a family-friendly show and provides entertainment to children and parents. Skip has several episodes on a variety of topics, all related to camping.

Happy Camper Radio covers safety issues such as exhaustion and hydration. The podcast also covers practical topics such as showers, clothing choices, and tent preparation. Even if you are only prepared to travel as far as your backyard, glean some wisdom for your upcoming family camping trips.

Learn from those who have traveled the trails first and use their wisdom from flashlight recommendations to campsite locations. Their website is also a great source of information. When you are planning your next camping trip, take a look through their site first, especially their safety tip section.

I recommend episode # 185: "Camping Supplies and Dollar Store Deals." While it was published in 2018, the content is still solid for today. Camping can be quite expensive if you purchase everything from an outdoor retailer. This episode shares some unique ideas for cutting costs.

Stories from the Trail

Are you a fan of hiking and love hearing stories from others? Stories from the Trail is a unique live call-in show for people who live outside. Gary Sizer and Megan Thompson are the hosts and are dedicated to providing content for hikers and outdoor dwellers.

They do not limit their guests to hikers and feature a wide variety of topics. Check them out if you are interested in hearing how others live. Who knows...you might just be inspired to go on an outdoor adventure yourself. Some of the episodes include an "E" rating (explicit content) and are not recommended for children.

I recommend episode #039: "Clarity." In it, Allyson "Clarity" Hester shares her story. She was a motorcycle-racing elementary school teacher before suffering a broken back. Today, she is an inspirational Appalachian Trail hiker and instructor. To learn more about Allyson, visit her website "Appalachian Trail Clarity."

Sorta Awesome

Leaving the world of outdoor adventures, Sorta Awesome is a podcast for women who want to find the awesome adventure of everyday life. From enneagram musings to face shaving, each week brings a new dose of awesome in the ears of their listeners. Join hosts Meg, Rebekah, and Kelly on their weekly awesome mission. The hosts do keep their language family friendly but some of the topics may not be appropriate for all children (especially my second episode recommendation).

I recommend episode #272: "Finding Awesome in a Year That Wasn't." In this episode, the hosts reflect back on the whirlwind of 2020 and discuss how they found the awesome in a year that was collectively not-awesome. Too often we think of adventure as going out and doing something big. 2020 gave us all a chance to redefine what an adventure is and how it looks for our families. For many of us, our adventures took place at home. Listen and learn how the hosts found the awesome in 2020.

I also recommend episode # 266: "Goosebumps, Daytime Chills, Creepy Stories, and More!" for those who enjoy a spooky adventure. Host Meg and special co-host Emily share spooky stories guaranteed to send a chill down your spine. The stories are presented in a way that entertains but won't leave you sleeping with a night light on like some scary movies.

Live Well Anyway

How many times do you wish you could go on an adventure but then reality slaps you? It can be hard to load up your bags and set off on an adventure when you are juggling the logistics of family life, a career, and your personal life. Live Well Anyway has a mission to help you learn how to live well and have fun in the midst of everyday life. Host MacKenzie Koppa goes first in this insightful and relatable podcast.

I recommend episode # 19: "Showing Up Consistently with Hannah Brencher." In this episode, author Hannah Brencher and MacKenzie talk about the importance of showing up. Hannah's new book "Fighting forward: Your Nitty-Gritty Guide to Beating the Lies That Hold You Back" is about learning how to show up for your life and not waiting for all the pieces to fall into place. Your life is now; live it, and live it well.

Your Best Adventures

Adventures can take on many forms. One person’s adventure might be hiking an untouched trail or taking a family hunting trip. While another person’s adventure might be simply going grocery shopping alone. No matter what type of adventure you seek, I am confident that you will find one with these recommendations.
